CloudNord Sets a High Bar

After trying a number of hosting providers over the years, CloudNord has quickly become one of the most impressive I've used. Getting started was straightforward from the moment I signed up. The pricing is excellent for the hardware on offer, and there are plenty of configuration choices without the whole process feeling overwhelming. The management panel is clean, responsive, and easy to navigate. Performance has been consistently reliable too — my community has enjoyed smooth gameplay with no noticeable lag or stability problems.

The detail

Running a Valheim server

A Valheim server holds a shared world, not shared characters. Everyone keeps their own Viking and their own gear, and only the world file lives on the server, which is why moving a single-player save across is straightforward. The server work is simulation: structures, tamed animals and dropped items in whatever areas players have loaded. Mods go through BepInEx, and most of them have to be installed on clients as well as the server.

How much RAM do you need?

2–4 players 4 GB A fresh world and a first base.
4–10 players 6 GB Several bases, tamed animals and plenty of building.
Up to 10, with mods 8 GB BepInEx with a moderate plugin list.
10+ players, modded slots 10 GB+ A raised player cap on a long-running world.

A guide, not a limit — you can change plan later without losing your world.

Getting started

01
Pick a plan and a location

Valheim leans on the CPU more than the RAM, though large bases want both. Start at 4 GB, and choose the nearest of our 18 locations to keep ping down for the group.

02
Name the world and set a password

The server needs a server name, a world name and a password of at least five characters that does not contain either name. Set all three before the first boot.

03
Bring your world, or start fresh

Upload the .db and .fwl pair from your local worlds folder over SFTP and match the world name in the config. Both files are needed — the .fwl on its own will not do.

04
Add BepInEx, if you want mods

Install BepInEx, then drop plugin DLLs into its plugins folder. Anything that changes items, world generation or the interface has to be installed on clients too, at matching versions.

Split your server

Turn one server into two, for the same money

Need a database, a test server or a second world? Split RAM off the server you already have. You are re-allocating memory you already pay for, so the total barely moves — no second order, no migration.

Database servers

A real database, not a shared one

Split off a database and you get your own MariaDB, PostgreSQL or MongoDB server — its own RAM, its own storage, its own version. Not a schema on a box shared with a thousand other people.

Your own instance

Dedicated RAM and CPU. A heavy query on someone else's database can't slow yours down.

Pick your engine and version

MariaDB, PostgreSQL or MongoDB, each with every version worth running — choose at creation, keep it until you decide otherwise.

Manage it in the panel

Create databases and users, browse tables and run queries from the browser.

Reachable from your servers

Point your plugins at it over the private network — no public exposure needed.

Splitting is done from your server's page once it is running — nothing to order.

Through BepInEx, which is the loader nearly every Valheim mod is built against. Install it on the server, then upload plugin DLLs into the plugins folder. Server-only mods work on their own; anything touching items, world generation or the UI has to be on every client at the same version.
Yes, and it is how most people start. Copy the .db and .fwl files out of your local worlds_local folder, upload both, and set the world name to match. Characters stay on players' own machines — only the world lives on the server, so nobody loses their gear in the move.
Valheim simulates every placed piece, every dropped item and every tamed animal in a loaded area. Sprawling bases, large item piles and big boar pens are the usual culprits. Clear dropped items, keep breeding under control, and split builds across separate areas rather than one enormous fortress.
Yes. Valheim supports crossplay between Steam, Xbox and Game Pass players, switched on with a launch option on the server rather than anything you install. Turn it on and share the join code or address. Leave it off if you want a Steam-only server, which suits some mod setups better.
No, and that is by design. Valheim only simulates areas with a player loaded in them, so crops, kilns and smelters make no progress on an empty server. Leaving the server up matters for availability rather than production — nothing is lost by having a quiet night.

DDoS protection, included

Every server sits behind always-on filtering at the network edge. Attack traffic is dropped before it reaches your node, so your players stay connected and you are not billed extra for the privilege.

On by default

Nothing to enable, configure or buy as an add-on. Active from the moment your server is created.

Filtered at the edge

Volumetric traffic is dropped upstream of your node, so your CPU and RAM keep serving players.

Game-aware filtering

Rules are tuned for game protocols, so real players are not caught alongside the attack traffic.

Nothing for you to do

Mitigation starts automatically. If something does get through, support can see it and respond.

Powered by a 10Gbps network

Every node sits on a 10Gbps uplink with direct routes into the major exchanges, so traffic reaches your players over as few hops as possible. Less distance, fewer transits, lower and steadier ping.
