Domain FAQ

Your address on the internet — the name people type to reach your site or your server.
Unlock it at your current registrar, copy the authorisation (EPP) code, then start the transfer here — most complete within days and add a year to your registration.
If you buy the domain alongside a server, yes — we create the records for you once the server is live. A domain bought on its own can be pointed wherever you like from your client area.
Auto-renewal protects you: we raise the renewal invoice ahead of expiry. Without it, domains enter a grace period before the registry releases them.

Choosing a domain for a gaming community

Pick something people can say out loud in a voice chat and type correctly first time. Short beats clever, and hyphens and creative spellings cause more mistyped connections than they are worth. Extensions matter less than they used to: .com still carries the most recognition, while .gg, .net and .io are all well understood by players. If your community already has a name, register the matching domain even if you are not ready to build anything, because names get taken and the annual cost is small.

Pointing a domain at your game server

A domain does not host anything by itself. It maps a name to an address, and you control that mapping through DNS records at whichever registrar holds the domain. For most games you create an A record pointing a subdomain at your server address, then players connect using that name and the port. Minecraft is the useful exception: an SRV record can carry the port as well, so players type only play.yourdomain.com. Changes usually propagate within minutes, though caching can stretch that to a few hours.

A record

Maps a name such as play.yourdomain.com to your server address. This is the record most games need.

SRV record

Used by Minecraft to publish the port alongside the address, so players connect without typing a port number.

Subdomains are free

One domain can serve a website, a game server and a voice server by pointing separate subdomains at each.

Allow for propagation

DNS changes are usually visible in minutes, but old records can stay cached with some providers for several hours.

Registration, renewal and ownership

A domain is rented rather than bought, normally in one-year terms. The registrant details you supply are what prove ownership, so keep the email address on the registration reachable, because that is where renewal and transfer notices go. WHOIS privacy hides those details from public lookups without affecting your ownership. Auto-renewal is the single most effective protection against losing a name. If you register a domain and then move it, note that most extensions cannot be transferred again within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer.

Common questions

No. Every server we provision comes with an address and port that players can connect to immediately, and plenty of communities never use anything else. A domain is worth having when you want something memorable, when you may change server or location later, or when you also run a website.
Yes, and you do not need to move the domain to do it. Add a record at your existing registrar pointing a subdomain at your server address, or an SRV record for Minecraft. Support can tell you the exact values to enter if you send us the domain and the server.
We do. Domains are registered through our own registrar connection, so the search, purchase, renewal and nameserver management all happen in your CloudNord client area and appear on the same invoices as your game servers. Renewal invoices are raised ahead of expiry and auto-renewal is on by default.
A domain is the name, hosting is the machine the name points to. You can own a domain with no hosting at all, and you can run a game server with no domain. They are bought separately, and one can be moved without disturbing the other.
