Rust Dev Blog March 2026

The latest Ship Shape update for Rust focuses heavily on improving life at sea, expanding the capabilities of player-built boats, and introducing several balance changes and quality-of-life improvements across the game.

This update builds on the recent naval systems and adds new ways to customize ships, improve ocean exploration, and make ship-to-ship combat more engaging.

Longer Daytime

One of the most noticeable gameplay changes is a longer daytime cycle. Daylight has been extended by around 20 minutes, giving players more time to explore, build, and gather resources before nightfall. Nighttime remains about the same length, keeping nighttime gameplay strategies intact.

This should hopefully allow for more time for daylight activities while still keeping nighttime tactics viable.

Expanded Boat Customization

Player boats are now much more versatile. Electricity, industrial systems, and water IO items can now be used on boats, allowing players to build more advanced ship setups while sailing.

Players can also decorate ships with wallpaper, similar to base customization on land. Some deployables are restricted for balance reasons, including auto turrets, SAM sites, windmills, and CCTV cameras.

Additional improvements include:

  • Deployable snapping for easier placement on boats
  • Boat building blocks can now be rotated or demolished anytime in edit mode
  • Various bug fixes to sails and boat placement
The tiny dive site buoys that would bring your full size boat to a complete halt have now been addressed. You may now sail freely!

Deep Sea Gameplay Changes

The Deep Sea area has received several balance updates designed to improve exploration and combat.

Key changes include:

  • Loot now spawns more gradually instead of appearing all at once
  • The Deep Sea now appears randomly on the map
  • RHIB boats can no longer enter the area
  • A notification sound plays when the Deep Sea opens
  • Increased visibility range for spotting ships in the ocean

These changes aim to create more dynamic encounters and encourage players to venture into the open ocean.

New Boat Building Stations

Static boat-building stations have been added to Deep Sea islands. These allow players to repair and modify ships while exploring far from shore.

The stations also include a small magnetic docking effect that helps pull nearby ships into position for easier repairs.

Ship combat has been adjusted to make naval battles more strategic. Boats hit by cannons now receive a movement penalty, slowing them down after repeated hits. This encourages boarding and tactical ship-to-ship combat rather than simple drive-by attacks.

Players aiming weapons on moving boats will also experience slight aim sway depending on boat speed.

They also buffed the player protection while mounted to cannons so players shouldn't be as vulnerable while using them.

Additional Improvements and Fixes

The update also includes many smaller improvements, including:

  • Sunken boats can now be destroyed piece-by-piece to recover loot
  • Boat decay timing adjustments to reduce punishment for offline players
  • Improved AI behaviour for naval scientists
  • New painting line tool for easier artwork creation
  • Performance improvements and server optimizations
