How to Convert Minecraft Worlds from Spigot to Vanilla

Minecraft

If you have recently switched your Minecraft server from SpigotPaperSpigot, or CraftBukkit to a Vanilla server on CloudNord, you might notice that your Nether and End worlds appear to have reset or lost all progress. This is a common issue caused by the way different server types store dimension data, but rest assured, your world data has not been lost—it simply needs to be migrated manually.

Understanding the Dimension Storage Differences

When running a Spigot-based server (including Paper and CraftBukkit), the Nether and End dimensions are stored in separate folders named:

  • world_nether for the Nether dimension

  • world_the_end for the End dimension

However, Vanilla Minecraft handles this differently by storing dimension data inside your primary world folder in directories named:

  • DIM-1 for the Nether

  • DIM1 for the End

Because Vanilla looks inside your main world folder for these dimension folders, it does not automatically read the Spigot-specific external folders. This discrepancy causes the Nether and End to appear reset when you switch server types.

Step-by-Step World Conversion Process on CloudNord

Follow these detailed instructions to safely migrate your Nether and/or End worlds to your Vanilla Minecraft server on CloudNord:

1. Stop Your Server Safely

  • Log in to your CloudNord Control Panel https://game.cloudnord.net/

  • Locate your Minecraft server instance

  • Click the Stop button to ensure the server shuts down properly before modifying files. This prevents file corruption.

2. Access Your World Dimension Files

  • Go to the File Manager or FTP Access section in your control panel.

  • Navigate to the existing Spigot dimension folders depending on which dimension you want to restore:

    • Nether: world_nether/DIM-1

    • End: world_the_end/DIM1

These folders contain the region data for their respective dimensions.

3. Download the Region Folder

  • Inside the chosen dimension folder (DIM-1 or DIM1), locate the region subfolder.

  • Download this region folder to your local computer. This folder contains all the Minecraft chunk data, including all your builds and terrain modifications for the dimension.

4. Prepare the Vanilla Dimension Folders

  • Navigate back to the main world directory, usually named world.

  • Inside this folder, you should see dimension subfolders named:

    • DIM-1 (Nether)

    • DIM1 (End)

If these folders do not exist, create them exactly with these names to match Vanilla’s dimension structure.

5. Upload the Region Folder to Vanilla Dimensions

  • Upload the region folder you previously downloaded from the Spigot dimension folder into the corresponding Vanilla dimension directory inside the main world folder:

    • For Nether: world/DIM-1/region

    • For End: world/DIM1/region

Make sure to overwrite any existing region folders or files if prompted.

6. Start Your Server and Verify

  • Return to your CloudNord control panel and click Start to launch your Vanilla server.

  • Join your server and visit the Nether and End dimensions to confirm that your previous world data has been restored successfully. Your custom builds, terrain edits, and structures should now appear as expected.

Important Notes and Best Practices

  • Always backup your entire server files, including your original world folders, before performing any manual file operations. This safeguards your data against accidental loss.

  • Use reliable FTP clients (e.g., FileZilla) or CloudNord’s File Manager for downloading and uploading files to avoid corruption.

  • Maintain consistent naming conventions—dimension folders and region folders must be named exactly as described for Vanilla Minecraft to recognize them.

  • If you experience issues after migration, try clearing your client cache or restarting your Minecraft client.

Switching server types can cause confusion due to how world data is stored differently, but following these instructions carefully ensures your Minecraft world progress remains intact and fully accessible on your new Vanilla server.
